We’d love to get to know our community partners! Throughout the year, one of our hard-working community partners members sits down to answer the 10 big questions about work, fun, and life on Maui!

We are pleased to bring you this Q&A with Kelly Maluo-Pearson, Chief Executive Officer, Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui.

1

Briefly describe your early life and professional beginnings that led you to where you are now.

I grew up in Hilo. My mom was a single mother who worked hard to ensure my sister and I lived a healthy and very happy life. While we were raised in a low-income, state public housing project area, my mother always made sure we had a roof over our heads, food on the table, and clothes on our backs. We didn’t have a lot of material things, but we grew up RICH IN LOVE AND CARE…all from our mother.

2

What is your official professional title? Please explain the work that you do.

As CEO, I oversee 40 to 45 team members, with 5 direct reports. I’m responsible for overseeing strategic planning and operation of the Clubs, in support of organizational mission and goals. I also provide leadership, direction and support to the Board of Directors and to staff management.

3

What do you love about your work?

I have the opportunity to work with like-minded human beings who authentically care, and we give our youth the necessary skills, tools, knowledge and hope they need to live healthy and happy lives. Each day is different! My team and I get to see the fruits of our daily work.

4

When you are not working, where might we find you?

Spending time with my family. Relaxing, but probably still thinking about “what else can we do for our children and teens to support them?”

5

What’s something about you that might surprise people?

No surprises here. Just plain and simple Kelly who loves life and loves my family!

6

Who has influenced you? Who/what inspires you?

My mother has always been my #1 role model and inspiration in everything I do. She was all about taking care of others, working hard, respecting others, and standing up for what I believe in. Although I lost her a long time ago, she remains in my heart and so do her teachings and lessons.

Today and in my daily life, our youth inspire me. The fact that they have so much more to experience, do and live is what keeps me going as CEO for this wonderful organization. The possibilities are endless, and everyone can live their dream.

Finally, and most important is my life partner. She is the epitome of peace, harmony and
balance. Everyone needs peace, harmony and balance in their lives.

7

Looking back at your career so far, what are you most proud of?

I’ve spent the past 26 years working for BGCM and making a difference!

8

Looking ahead 10 years, what do you hope to achieve?

More years of making a difference!

9

How might others describe you?

Someone who is committed to youth development and passionate about providing every young person with the hope and opportunity he/she deserves.
