Kepā Maly is Honored Guest, Presents Ledcor Maui’s Gift
at Hoʻomau 2024
With deep appreciation for the value of perpetuating ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, Ledcor Maui was honored to host an appearance on Maui by Kepā Maly, renowned cultural historian and resource specialist. The occasion was Nā Leo Pūlama o Maui’s 37th Annual Hoʻomau Benefit Concert, which was held March 23 at Maui Nui Botanical Gardens. Nā Leo Pūlama o Maui is the parent-based nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting Hawaiian immersion preschool program Pūnana Leo o Maui.
As a lifelong student of Hawaiian language, Kepā emphasizes the importance of keeping the culture alive and its people thriving through ʻōlelo.
To support this growth and the vision of Nā Leo Pūlama o Maui, Ledcor Maui made a significant donation to Pūnana Leo. Kepā Maly—together with Eric Gerlach, Ledcor Maui’s senior vice president—presented the donation for $60,000 by the following organizations Ledcor Maui, ʻĀina Momona, Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement, Honua Consulting, Kumu Pono Associates, ʻĀina Archeology, PB Sullivan, PBR Hawaii, and Weinstein Architects. Kepā made the presentation first in Hawaiian, then in English.

Kepā’s speech translated
Aloha to our friends here on Great Maui of the chief Kama. We are here with love for perpetuation of the mother language. That’s what it is for native Hawaiians, while for others it is the Hawaiian language.
We—Ledcor, Honua Consulting and our partners—support the great work done by Kiliwehi and the friends of Pūnana Leo (Nest for the Voice, a place that nurtures the Hawaiian language). This is a truly valuable undertaking.
Kupuna Puku‘i taught me a chant that describes the great value of the language and history of Hawai‘i. It is thus—
The god calling out in the calm,
Calling from the heights of Pua‘ahulunui.
This god, hidden in amongst the forest verdure
Has woven a lei (spoken words and history) for our ancestors,
Might you also add us to the lei (history)
Here is the gift…
Mahalo nui loa from Ledcor Maui to Kepā Maly, Kili Nāmau‘u, Nā Leo Pūlama o Maui, Pūnana Leo o Maui, and all our partners in this inspiring venture. As the theme of Ho‘omau 2024 states: “I ala. I ulu. I ola.” (To rise. To grow. To live.)
