A Legacy of Hula:

Pāʻū O Hiʻiaka Marks Its Golden Anniversary

For five decades, Pāʻū O Hiʻiaka has been much more than a hālau hula. It has served as a place of learning, cultural preservation, community connection, and the perpetuation of Hawaiian knowledge for the Maui community. This year, the hālau proudly celebrates its 50th anniversary, marking a remarkable milestone in a journey that has shaped generations of dancers, cultural practitioners, and community leaders.

Founded in 1976 by Kumu Hula Hōkūlani Holt-Padilla, Pāʻū O Hiʻiaka was established with a vision that hula is more than performance. It is a living expression of Hawaiian values, history, language, genealogy, and relationship to place. Over the past fifty years, that philosophy has guided countless students who have passed through the hālau’s doors, learning not only movement and chant, but also the deeper cultural foundations that give hula its meaning.

Hula is more than dance, it is a way of life,” a principle long associated with the hālau, has remained at the heart of Pāʻū O Hiʻiaka’s teachings. Through the study of oli, mele, cultural protocol, native plants, adornment, storytelling, and Hawaiian language, students gain an understanding of the interconnected nature of Hawaiian culture and the responsibility that comes with carrying it forward.

Throughout its history, Pāʻū O Hiʻiaka has earned recognition on some of Hawaiʻi’s most respected stages. The hālau has participated in events and competitions including the Merrie Monarch Festival, King Kamehameha Day Hula Competition, Queen Kaʻahumanu Festival Competition, and numerous community celebrations across the islands. Yet its greatest achievement may be the generations of cultural practitioners it has helped nurture and inspire.

The golden anniversary offers an opportunity to reflect on the legacy of Kumu Hōkūlani Holt-Padilla, whose dedication to Hawaiian culture extends far beyond the hālau. A respected cultural leader, educator, and advocate, Holt-Padilla has devoted her life to preserving Hawaiian traditions and creating opportunities for future generations to connect with ʻike kūpuna, the wisdom of their ancestors. Her leadership has helped establish Pāʻū O Hiʻiaka as one of Maui’s most influential cultural institutions.

To commemorate the occasion, alumni, students, and community members gathered for a special anniversary gala celebrating fifty years of tradition, aloha, hula, mele, and moʻolelo. The milestone event honored not only the accomplishments of the hālau but also the many individuals who have contributed to its success over the years. The celebration reflected the spirit of family and community that has defined Pāʻū O Hiʻiaka since its founding.

As Maui continues to balance change, advancements and honoring history, organizations like Pāʻū O Hiʻiaka play an essential role in ensuring that Hawaiian cultural knowledge remains vibrant, alive and rooted in tradition. Through education, performance, community engagement, and mentorship, the hālau continues to inspire new generations to embrace their heritage and deepen their connection to Hawaiʻi’s unique traditions.

Pāʻū O Hiʻiaka’s story is one of resilience, dedication, and aloha, demonstrating how a single hālau can influence an entire community while honoring the wisdom of the past.
