Lā Hoʻi Hoʻi Ea

Honoring Hawaiian Sovereignty Restoration Day

Each year on July 31, Hawaiʻi commemorates Lā Hoʻi Hoʻi Ea, a day that reflects the resilience, diplomacy, and enduring spirit of the Hawaiian Kingdom. More than a historical observance, Lā Hoʻi Hoʻi Ea serves as a reminder of the deep connection between people, place, and the principles of justice that continue to shape Hawaiʻi today.

The origins of Lā Hoʻi Hoʻi Ea trace back to 1843 during a period known as the Paulet Affair. British naval officer Lord George Paulet, acting without authorization from the British government, compelled King Kamehameha III, Kauikeaouli, to temporarily cede authority over the Hawaiian Kingdom to Great Britain. For several months, the Hawaiian flag was lowered and British control was imposed over the islands.

Recognizing the injustice of the occupation, the British government dispatched Rear Admiral Richard Darton Thomas to investigate. On July 31, 1843, sovereignty was formally restored to the Hawaiian Kingdom in a ceremony attended by thousands. The Hawaiian flag was once again raised, marking the return of the nation’s independent governance. It was during this historic occasion that King Kamehameha III proclaimed the words that would become the state motto of Hawaiʻi:

“Ua Mau ke Ea o ka ʻĀina i ka Pono.”

Often translated as,“The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness,” the phrase carries deeper meanings as the word ea can also signify life, breath, sovereignty, and self-governance.

Lā Hoʻi Hoʻi Ea became one of the first national holidays of the Hawaiian Kingdom and was celebrated annually throughout the monarchy. While the holiday was later removed from the Kingdom’s official calendar in 1867, it continued to be remembered by Native Hawaiians and community members. In modern times, the observance has experienced a resurgence, with cultural practitioners, educators, community organizations, and families gathering each year to honor this pivotal moment in Hawaiian history.

Today, Lā Hoʻi Hoʻi Ea celebrations often include educational talks, cultural performances, hoʻokupu ceremonies, music, hula, historical reenactments, and opportunities for community reflection. Events are held across the islands, bringing together people of all backgrounds to learn about the history of the Hawaiian Kingdom and the significance of sovereignty, justice, and aloha ʻāina.

For many, the observance is not simply about remembering the past. It is an invitation to deepen our understanding of Hawaiʻi’s history, recognize the perseverance of the Hawaiian people, and consider our collective responsibility to care for the land and one another.
