A Visit to Hawai'i Island
With Jimmy Medeiros
Over a long weekend at the end of 2024, members from the Ledcor Maui team with their ʻohana visited the Island of Hawaiʻi and had the good fortune to spend a day with Jimmy Medeiros and his wife Michelle. Jimmy Medeiros was born and raised on the Island of Hawaiʻi and is a widely respected cultural descendant of Pu’uhonua ‘O Honaunau and the adjoining ahupua’a South Kona. He is well known for his efforts to protect and preserve significant cultural sites in Kealakekua, Keopuka and Ki’ilae.
Ledcor Maui has been working with Jimmy through his company Kuleana Consulting, which works in cultural consulting, construction monitoring, historic site remediation, and park and trail development. Kuleana Consulting was brought to Maui and Ledcor Maui’s Laʻi Loa project to clear overgrown brush and trees from the highly sensitive Preservation Area.
The Ledcor Maui team toured the Kealakekua area and historic preservation sites along with coastline with Jimmy and heard stories of the years he spent working for the protection of this area and his ancestral history.
Walking this area and hearing mo’olelo of the land and history was very educational to the Ledcor Maui team. Everyone who attended was humbled by the warm welcome and aloha from Jimmy and Michelle.
