Ahupuaʻa Restoration on Molokaʻi

with ʻĀina Momona

Members of the Ledcor Maui team visited the ʻĀina Momona team on Molokaʻi to see firsthand and learn about ahupuaʻa restoration. ʻĀina Momona has been actively restoring and revitalizing Kaʻamola and historic Keawanui Fishpond. Restoration efforts include erosion mitigation, replanting of native species, ungulate control, improving stormwater management to reduce runoff and management of loko iʻa. The Kona storms in March of 2026 put the ahupuaʻa restoration to the test and proved the effectiveness of this regenerative work. Where other areas of Molokaʻi were severely impacted with damage from runoff, Kaʻamola and coastal waters of Keawanui Fishpond did not experience the same impacts.

The Ledcor Maui team is grateful to learn from ʻĀina Momona and their hands-on experience in hopes that similar learnings and restoration efforts can be applied to South Maui.
