Traditional Hawaiian Blessing

As new homeowners move into La`i Loa, they have been gifted with a traditional Hawaiian home blessing with Kahu Vene. In Hawai‘i, when a new home is built we bless it through a ceremony known as “Oki ka piko o ka hale“, “to cut the umbilical cord of the house.” Just like a new child, the severing of the piko from the mother gives it a life of its own. And just like a child, care should be taken in the raising and treatment of this new family member. This moving experience for the homeowners helps to surround and fill a new home with love, aloha and uplifting thoughts and attention.

“With the blessing of a home in Hawai‘i comes the ‘kuleana’ or responsibility of home owner(s) to be good stewards of the ‘Lani’ (heaven), the ‘Moana’ (ocean), and the ‘Honua’ (earth) of where they reside” said Kahu Vene.

“To be ‘pono’ and ‘do the right thing’ to protect, preserve, and perpetuate our island’s resources so we can pass it on to the next generation. There is much to learn from those who walked the land before us and to honor their legacy as we inspire those who will walk the land after us.
